The website (and some other reviews) significantly over-state the hospitality we experienced when we hiked up from Portovenere today for lunch at the Refuge. It was mid-day and I had previously called (no answer) and sent a text message (no response) to make sure they were open and serving lunch. When we got there - which ain't easy! - the 2 older men there could not have been less interested in serving us. They seemed put-out that we even asked for food. Their response was to bark at us that all they had was beer, coca-cola and lemon soda. Then they ignored us and went back to whatever they were already doing. We ventured on, deeply disappointed in the lack of any hospitality. Oh - but the view is great.
Best experience! The guys managing this beautiful nice place have created a real secret gem in the middle of the mountains 20 min from Porto Venere (steep way to the town). It is quit, magical and so worth visiting and staying. Plan at least 1 night - you might regret it otherwise. The food is the best we had in Italy. I love this place.

We are very greatfull to have te possibility, thanks to does guys running the Rifugio Muzzerone, to spend our dinner and breakfast looking at one of the most stunning see view over Porto Venere.

Friendly people, fresh air, great food, good beer. This place is well worth the hike or white knuckled drive up the hill. If you’re climbing nearby, consider this your base of operations. The food is fresh and local; the beer is cold and cheap. Bring your camera for the views and some Euros (cash only)!
I cannot recommend this place! Judging by the reviews, this place was created in order to feed people who walk in Portovenere on a hard road, but we were never fed there. We got there on a Monday at 3:00 pm. At first, the worker pretended not to notice our presence, and when we called him, he was very surprised that we had come here to eat, and said that it was already late and they could not feed us. We were very hungry and frustrated and also couldn't figure out what time we had to get there to be fed if 3pm on a Monday is too late?
The room was nice enough, but the staff are so unfriendly. When I tried to ask a question in English, they rolled their eyes and refused to serve my wife and I. Really, I've never been treated as poorly by any restaurant staff anywhere.
Special place to see la spezia from above. It is not a hotel but a mountain hut even though it is only 300m above the see level. Don't expect luxury treat. But if you want to get immersed in nature and enjoy hiking or climbing this stop is a must. Easy access with a private car from above, some easy walking from Porte Venere. Our kids loved it (6 and 3).
